I took my youngest son and his best friend to the midnight release of Pokemon X and Y on Friday. They are both eleven years old and given the fact that it was a Friday and a 3 days weekend for Columbus Day the green light was given for this late night purchase. This is the first time we have ever attended a midnight release for a video game. Wow, was I surprised at the number of people and the medium age. There were close to a hundred people and all in their late teens early twenties. Pokemon was first release in 1996, so it’s a franchise with 17 years of history. Pokemon has become one of the most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world. I can only assume that these millennial generations-20 something year olds grew up on the game and now continue to play. The event got me thinking about the residual income that a single game can generate.
Linear or Residual Income
The Pokemon event got me thinking of residual income opportunities. A video game takes a team to produce and could take years to complete. Once done the game can generate income for years on several different platforms. What type of income do you earn? For most linear income is the standard. The type of income that is earned as you work, some earn an hourly wage or a salary for a set amount of hours. Residual income is income that continues to generate after the initial work is complete.
Our family is the linear income type. Both my wife and I work. I’m a salaried employee and she is an hourly. Throughout our debt repayment process we have looked at ways to increase our income. As a salaried employee I do not have the opportunity to pick up overtime as she does. We try and take advantage of that. I try and be as flexible as possible to help out with the children if she can pick up a few extra hours. I certainly do my best and work hard at my salaried position, in hopes to be rewarded with a nice merit increase or promotion at the end of the year.
As we look beyond our nine to five’s we have been trying to come up with some good residual income ideas. This blog could be one. With enough traffic, and some ad clicks it could earn some extra cash and it’s available to the world 24-7. I have recently set up a youtube account and posted some videos with Google ads enable as well, as a possible residual income money maker.
I did this based on the amount of time my 3 children spend on youtube watching videos and the fact that the Shaytards are making a living base on their videos views. Content is king, and I lack some, but plan on adding more shortly.
E-books are certainly another avenue. I think most writers of e-books attempt to write about things they know best, personal experience type stuff. Our debt repayment story could be a good venture into the residual income world.
Top Grossing Video Games
There are a few ways you can look at the top video game sales of all time, by number of copies sold or by dollars earned. Here are the top 3 as of June, 2013:
3. Mario Kart for Wii – $1.4 billion
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops – $1.5 billion
1. World of Warcraft – $10 billion
Now consider a Hollywood movie reaches blocker buster status when it reached $100 million in ticket sales. Clearly these video games have reached elite status based on their sales.
What linear or residual income ideas help you earn extra money? Have you ever been to a midnight release?
