Career limiting moves is a phrase that I have recently heard for the first time. Being in the work force for over 20+ years it’s a concept I am certainly familiar with and have witnessed a few times at the company Christmas party. I just never knew there was a catch phase to collectively sum them up. The CLMs are different from your average mistakes like replying to all on an e-mail or taking too long to get information together for your boss when they need it right away.
Social Media – Using them at work when you should be working, or using it to post company news or gossip about your co-workers. This will only land you on the unemployment line.
Tardiness – Consistently being late to work, meetings, calls etc. This just shows you lack of time management and respect for others.
Not taking part in Social functions – Here’s you opportunity to rub elbows with your boss and co-workers over a few drinks to establish some common ground and get to know them outside of the office. Please whatever you do don’t get drunk.
Time off – Calling out sick often, especially on a Fridays or Mondays and extending your weekend. I love the day before a vacation call out. Sure we all do get sick or need a mental health day once in a while, but are aware of the work load and who else has off.
Gossip / Complaining – No one likes the toxic employee, the constant complainer who is never happy, and makes everyone else around them unhappy. If it’s that bad go find another place to work. Stay away from the gossip game as well, this will only get you into trouble. Like you mom always said if you don’t have anything nice to say……
Doing just the minimum – being a wall flower is not the way to get noticed, don’t be afraid to take on the extra work and show you are capable of bigger and better things.
These are just some of my observations in the work place over the last 20 years. 10 of which have been in a leadership role. Obviously social media was not an issue 5 years ago, but today can be a big issue. I’m sure the workplace we evolve further over time as technology continues to advanced and the younger work force who has grown up on social media enter it.
What career limiting moves do you think are most hurtful, have you every made a CLM mistake?
